The earliest risks are personal — but the consequences become organizational. Most failures are visible long before they become business problems.

  • Difficulties adapting for the spouse or accompanying partner
  • Challenges integrating into the new cultural environment
  • Relationship strain intensified by relocation stress
  • Reduced executive concentration and performance
  • Early termination of the assignment
Consequences for the company
  • Significant repatriation and replacement costs
  • Loss of productivity and strategic momentum
  • Delays in critical international projects
  • Reduced return on global mobility investment

"Most assignment failures are visible long before they become business problems. The opportunity is to act early — when intervention is still simple."

Vicente Perez-Lucerga
Certified Partnerschule Coach · Former C-Suite Executive · Global Mobility Specialist

Vicente spent nearly three decades in international executive roles, including C-suite responsibility in global industrial companies. His work took him across countries, cultures and business systems — from Germany and Spain to Brazil and the United States — often in situations where performance pressure, uncertainty and personal responsibility were high.

Today, he is a certified Partnerschule coach trained in the method developed by Rudolf Sanders. This allows him to combine structured couples work with a perspective that is unusual in this field: he understands the executive international assignment system from the inside.

An international assignment is never only a career move. It changes the couple, the family, the children's sense of belonging, the partner's identity and the emotional base from which the executive is expected to perform. In many organisations, these pressures are treated as private matters. In reality, they often determine whether an assignment becomes sustainable or quietly starts to fail.

"In an international assignment, the relationship is not outside the assignment. It is part of its foundation."
